Ordered my gasket kit for my Sporty top end this morning. The name that kept coming up was Cometic! A little pricey but I don't think you should skimp on gaskets! I lucked out at the last LB Swap meet and scored a set of 1200cc Sportster cylinders that were hardly used (cross hatching from the factory hone is still visibly apparent!) for 40 bones! A woman had purchased a used 1200 Sporty but told the shop she wanted everything on the engine to be new so the shop removed some good parts for brand new ones! Little did she know that her motor was barely used. Hey, the customer is always right! Once the gaskets come in my motor is going back together!

Polished cam cover
Reworked my old cam cover and decided to polish it so it matches my primary and rocker covers. Its alot of work as I've already mentioned. 80 grit to knock down and big scratches and nicks in the aluminum, 120 grit to knock down the swirls left by the 80 grit, 220 directional wet sanding, 400, 600, then 1000 grit to get a smooth finish. Then a couple of cotton tee shirts and Mother's Polish. Voila, polished cam cover!Sunday, July 4, 2010

Polished Primary
Finished polishing the primary and clutch cover. Tedious work but satisfying and I saved some bucks doing it myself. Next up is the cam cover.Wednesday, June 2, 2010
Primary
The primary chain tensioner is showing normal wear. I thought I was going to have to change it out but it looks like its got alot of life left. Not bad for 9 year old bike. I'm also going to polish the primary cover as well as the cam cover.
Scar removal
I decided to try to file down an old scar on my motor's clutch cover. The bike was laid down when a lady in a cage cut off my younger brother several years ago in Old Town San Diego. A Harbor Freight file and some elbow grease does the trick. I need to do more sanding and need to work up to 600 grit then polish on a buffing wheel and it will look like new!
